What is corrosion?
A
Where metals react with substances in their environment and are gradually destroyed.

What is rusting?
A
Corrosion of iron by water and air.

What are 2 ways to prevent rusting?
A
Barrier Method - painting, greasing and electroplating iron to keep out water and oxygen.
Sacrificial method - attaching a more reactive metal to iron.

What is potable water?
A
Water that is safe to drink.

What are the 3 steps to treat ground water?
A
- Mesh - to remove any large debris such as twigs
- Sand and gravel filtration - to remove any solid bits
- Sterilisation - to kill off any harmful bacteria or microbes using chlorine gas, ozone or UV light.

What is desalination?
A
It’s carried out in areas without much fresh water to make sea water potable.
Such as distillation - boiling the water to separate it from dissolved salts.

What is the treatment of waste water?
A
- Screening - remove large solid debris
- Sedimentation -allowing solid particles to settle to the bottom of the tank
- Effluent does through aerobic digestion of organic matter and is released back into the environment
- Sludge does through anaerobic digestion of matter and is created into fertiliser and natural gas.
