James is suffering from atherosclerosis. Provide some dietary recommendations to him.
- Take normal amounts of fiber (20-30 grams) with increased (6-10 grams of soluble fiber)
- Reduce fat (20-30% of energy) and cholesterol (<200 or <300 mg/day). [<1% Trans, <7% SAFA, 10% PUFA, 10-15% MUFA)
- Take 2 handfuls of nuts (1-2 ounces) everyday
- Take 2 or more servings of fish every week.
- Moderate intake of alcohol (<1 drinks per day for women, <2 drinks per day for men)
How should James (atherosclerosis patient) go about shopping for groceries and eating at a restaurant?
When shopping/cooking:
- Prefer lean meats over fatty meats
- Prefer chicken breast and drumstick over chicken thigh and wings
- Choose skim milk over whole milk
- Trim poultry skin and visible fat
- Choose more vegetables, fruits, grains, cereals and unsaturated fats
- Avoid fatty bakery products
When eating out:
- Avoid high fat sauces
- Minimize intake of added sugar
- Avoid added salts
- Consume alcohol in moderation.
Describe nutritional management for hypertensive patients/
- Salt Restriction
- Limit intake of alcohol
- Adequate intake of potassium, calcium and magnesium
- Decrease SAFA and cholesterol intake
What are the lifestyle changes a hypertensive patient should make?
- Stop smoking
