C6- Covalent Bonds Flashcards
What do molecular substances contain
Groups of atoms held together by strong covalent bonds
What does the molecular formula show
The number of atoms of each element bonded together in a simple molecule
What are covalent bonds formed between
Non metals
How are covalent bonds produced
By sharing pairs of electrons
What happens to atoms when a covalent bond forms
The atoms become more stable as they can use shared electrons to complete their outer electron shells
What does stable mean
Less reactive
What’s a double covalent bond
Eg carbon dioxide as carbon shared electrons with each oxygen
How are the covalent bonds drawn
With dots and crosses
The outer shells cross over and draw the electrons that are being shared in the middle of the cross over
How are the atoms in molecules held together
By strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the positive nuclei and negative electrons in the bonded atoms
What are molecular forces like
The forces of attraction between molecules are very weak
What’s the valancy
The numbers of covalent bonds formed by atoms of different elements
What formula can be worked out by matching up the valencies
The molecular formulae
