C5.5 Pressure systems Flashcards
Definition of a pressure system
a system comprising one or more pressure vessels of rigid construction, any associated pipework and protective devices
Examples of pressure systems
autoclaves boilers compressed air systems heat exchangers refrigeration plant pressure gauges
What are the regs that cover pressure system
Pressure Systems Safety Regs 2000
Reg 8
only use if written scheme of periodic examination has been drawn up by a competent person
only applies to system where pressure of system multiplied by volume of the pressure system is above 250 bar litres
Reg 9
examinations to be carried out by competent person
Reg 4
requirements of pressure system design
designed / constructed of suitable material
designed / constructed so can be examined
means of access to the interior without danger
protective devices provided to prevent danger and release contents safely
Factors in the design of pressure systems
expected life of equipment
need for examination
adequate sized openings to permit internal exam
means to undertake exam of vessels with small interiors
conditions of operation
system performance requirements
how to deal with abnormal start and shutdown conditions
controls / protective devices to prevent abnormal conditions
measuring devices, eg gauges for pressure, temp
allow for corrosion
suitable pipework to allow for expansion / contraction
What do Pressure Equipment Reg 1999 cover
supply of pressure equipment
requirement for CE marking
apply to all equipment above 0.5 bar
Reg 13
repairs or mods to pressure systems
must not give rise to danger
Repair & mod considerations
original design spec
use of the system after repair / mod
change in fluids used
effects of repairs / mods on system integrity
whether previous protective equipment still adequate
Reg 5
information & marking
provide written info ref design, construction, examination, operation, maintenance
prevents removal of any info marking or plate
Adequate info to provide ref pressure systems
safe operating limits certs of conformity scheme of examination design pressures and temps design standards construction materials intended contents intended flow rates capacity
Required pressure vessel markings
manuf name serial number date of manuf standard to which the vessel is built max allowable pressure min allowable pressure where this is other than atmospheric design temp
Reg 16
requires CE marking
Reg 14
results of inspections must be recorded and stored
Safe use of pressure systems
safe operating limits known
periodic checking of pressure relief valves
instructions for use - start up, shutdown, normal ops, controls, emergencies
pressure gauges
emergency procedures
Reg 7
use of pressure system not permitted unless safe operating limits are known
What should a written examination scheme cover
pressure vessels
protective devices
pipework & valves
pumps & compressors
nature & frequency of exams
measures needed to prepare system for safe exam
factors ref frequency of exams
previous intervals previous records standards of supervision level of routine checks type / quality of fluids in system likelihood of creep, fatigue etc failures corrosion potential & effect presence of heat sources
Examination techniques
visual inspection
NDT
performance testing
Reg 12
Ensure pressure system maintained in good order
Factors when preparing maintenance plan
age of system operating conditions working environ manuf info previous maint history exam reports inspection results repairs / mods risks to H&S from failure
Responsibilities of competent person
advise system user ref scope of written scheme of exam
draw up or certify written scheme of exam
undertake exam
