C5.1 Flashcards
What is the yield of a product?
It is the mass of that product that is made in a chemical reaction
What is the theoretical yield?
The maximum mass it is possible to make from a given mass of reactants
What do you need to know to calculate the theoretical yield?
The mass of the limiting reactant
The relative formula masses of reactants and products
The balanced equation for the reaction
What if the formula for the theoretical yield?
mass of limiting reactant
—————————————- ✖️sum of Mr for products
Sum of Mr for limiting reactant
What is the actual yield?
The mass of product that you actually make in a chemical reaction.
What is the percentage yield?
the proportion of the theoretical yield actually obtained during a reaction, expressed as a percentage.
How do you calculate the percentage yield
Actual yield
—————————. ✖️100
Theoretical yield
Why might the percentage yield be less that 100%
The reactants may react in a different way than expected
The reaction may not go to completion as some of the reactants present do not react
You may lose some of the product when you separate it from the reaction mixture and purify it.
What is the atom economy?
It is a measure of how many atoms in the reactants form a desired product
How do you calculate atom economy?
Sum of Mr of the desired product
—————————————————— ✖️100
Sum of Mr of all products
