H - hydrogen
Cu - copper
How well a metal reacts
- for metals, their reactivity is determined by how easily they loose electrons
Metal + Water ——>
Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
Formation of metal ore
Oxidation =
Gain of Oxygen
Extraction of metal
Reduction =
Loss of Oxygen
Metal higher than carbon in the reactivity series have to be extracted using…
..electrolysis
What is a Redox Reaction ?
Redox reactions are reactions where both oxidation and reduction are taking place.
- electrons are transferred
What do displacement reactions involve?
Displacement reactions Olle one metal kicking another one out of a compound.
Here’s the rule:
A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound.
What is electrolysis ?
The process by which electric current is passed through a substance to effect a chemical change. The chemical change is one in which the substance loses or gains an electron (oxidation or reduction).
Electrolysis of aqueous solutions
a process in which an electrical current is passed through an aqueous (water-based) solution to cause chemical reactions. This process splits the ions in the solution into individual atoms, allowing them to gain or lose electrons.
During electrolysis, which electrode are the positive ions attracted to?
Cathode
Why can’t ionic solids not undergo electrolysis?
The ions are in fixed positions
Do ions get reduced or oxidised at the anode?
Oxidised
During the manufacture of aluminium from bauxite, which electrode is aluminium formed at ?
Cathode
(Negative electrode)
In what situation will hydrogen gas be given out during the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of an ionic solid?
If the metal element formed during electrolysis is more reactive than hydrogen, then hydrogen will be produced at the cathode
In a displacement reaction, does the metal atom get reduced or oxidation?
Oxidation
In terms of electrons, give the definition of oxidation.
Oxidation is loss of electrons, gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen.
In terms of electrons, give the definition of reduction.
Reduction is gain of electrons, loss of oxygen or gain or hydrogen.
State the value of the Avogadro constant.
