C3b - Rate of reaction (2) Flashcards
What does the rate of reaction depend on? (2)
collision frequency of reacting particles
energy transferred during the collision (whether the collision is successful or effective)
What is the effect of changing temperature on the rate of a chemical reaction?
as temperature increases, the kinetic energy of particles increases, so they move faster and the frequency of collisions increase, also more energy is transferred during collisions, so they are more likely to be successful, leading to increased successful collisions between particles per time period, so increasing rate of reaction
What is the effect of changing the concentration on the rate of a chemical reaction?
higher concentration means there are more particles of reactants in the same volume, therefore increasing the chance of collision between particles, resulting in more successful collisions between particles per time period, so increasing rate of reaction
What is the effect of changing the pressure on the rate of a chemical reaction?
higher pressure means the reactant particles are more crowded, therefore increasing the chance of collision between particles, resulting in more successful collisions between particles per time period, so increasing rate of reaction
How do you decide when a reaction has finished from a graph
gradient is 0(line is horizontal)
How do you decide when a reaction has finished from a table
numbers will stop changing
