C1d - Making polymers Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon
compound whose molecules contain hydrogen and carbon atoms only
What is a saturated compound
compound that contains only single covalent bonds between carbon atoms
What is a unsaturated compound
compound that contains at least one double bond between carbon atoms
What are alkane + general formula
saturated hydrocarbon whose atoms are bonded via single covalent bonds only
CnH2n+2
What are alkene + general formula
unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains a double covalent bond between 2 of its carbon
CnH2n
What are double bonds
2 shared pairs of electrons between atoms
How can you test for alkenes
bromine water turns from orange to colourless in the presence of an alkene
Explain the reaction between an alkene and bromine water (2)
addition reaction takes place between bromine and alkene
-forms a colourless dibromo compound
Describe addition polymerisation (3)
a process in which many unsaturated alkene monomer molecules react together to form saturated a polymer which only contain single covalent bonds
The reaction causes the double bond in the monomer to break and each of the two carbon atoms to form a new bond
Requires high pressure and catalyst
Try drawing displayed formulas of polymers and monomers(no answer)
