C3a - Rate of reaction (1) Flashcards
What is the rate of reaction
a measure of the amount of product formed in a fixed time period
What are some common units for the rate of reaction (2+2)
g/s or g/min
cm3/s or cm3/min
What are the laboratory apparatus needed to measure the rate of reaction producing a gas (2)
gas syringe
flask
Why does a reaction stop
One of reactants (limiting reactant) completely used up, so reaction cannot continue
How and why does the amount of product formed vary? (2)
the amount of product formed is directly proportional to amount of limiting reactant used
the greater the amount of limiting reactant there is, the more reacting particles there are, so the more product is formed
What is the limiting reactant
the reactant not in excess that is all used up at the end of the reaction
How is the rate of reaction calculated from a graph?
the rate of reaction is the gradient or slope of the line on a graph of amount of product against time
