C3 Structure & Bonding Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is when two atoms share a pair of electrons.
What is an ionic bond?
Ionic bond is the strong electrostatic forces between positve and negative ions.
Which type(s) of element form ionic bonds?
Metals and Non-metals
Which type(s) of element form covalent bonds?
Non-metals only
Which type(s) of element form metallic bonds?
Metals only
What is a metallic bond?
A metallic bond is strong electrostatic attraction between postive ions and negative delocalised electrons.
What are examples of giant covalent?
Diamond
Graphite
Graphene
Why do ionic substance have a high melting and boiling point?
This is due enough energy to break the strong ionic bonds
When can an ionic bond conduct electricity?
Molten or Solution(Dissolved in Water)
Why do ionic substances conduct elecrticty in molten or a solution(dissolved in water)?
The ions are free to move in these states and they carry a charge.
What molecular ions should you remember?
Hydroxide ion
Sulphate ion
Carbonate ion
Nitrate ion
Ammonium ion
What charge ions are Cations?
Positive ions
What charge ions are Anions?
Negative ions
Are ionic compounds also called salts?
True
Why does diamond have a high melting point?
It would need a lot of energy to break the covalent bonds.
What is an alloy?
Alloys are mixture of metals.
