What is a pilgrimage?
A journey to a holy place.
What and where is the Holy Land?
The place Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection took place.
What are two reason that Christians may want to visit the Holy Land?
- Could help them understand their history and/or the history of their religion better.
- Could help them grow in their faith by bringing stories of Jesus to life.
What is a reason that Christians may not want to visit the Holy Land?
- The current political situation involving a conflict would deter many Christians for safety issues.

- The Church of the Nativity (where Jesus was believed to be born)
- The Via Dolorosa (the path Jesus took from Pilate’s house to his crucifixion)
- The Church of the Holy Sepulchre (the site of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection)

A girl named Bernadette saw 18 apparitions of Mary and in one of them Mary told her to dig in a spot Bernadette found a spring considered to have healing powers.

What does Advent mean?
A time of preparation.
When is Advent?
It follows the four Sundays before Christmas.
What is the significance of Advent? [2]
- It is a time of preparation for celebrating the Incarnation at Christmas.
- It is also a time to prepare for the second coming of Jesus (parousia).
What element/object is often used at Advent and why?
An Advent wreath as the candles symbolize joy, hope, peace, and love and are lit on the four Sundays before Christmas.

Matthew and Luke.

The start of the liturgical Church year.
When is Christmas celebrated in the Orthodox Church?

Many fast during this time and pray more consistenly as fasting helps people shift their focus from themselves to others.
