What are the 4 stages of the client-trainer relationship?
Stage 1: Rapport
Stage 2: Investigation
Stage 3: Planning
Stage 4: Action
What happens during the investigation stage?
Trainers review clients’ health and fitness data, any available test results, medical clearance information and clients’ goals and exercise history (incl. exercise likes & dislikes).
What are the elements of nonverbal communication?
Voice quality: Loud/Soft, Intonations
Eye contact: Direct and friendly
Facial expression: Sincere emotions
Hand gestures: Relaxed, fluid hand gestures
Body position: Open, well-balanced and erect
How can a personal trainer demonstrate good listening skills?
Respond to the clients’ answers in the following ways:
- Encouraging
- Paraphrasing
- Questioning: Open-ended questions
- Reflecting: Restate main points and feelings
- Summarizing key points that have a bearing on exercise program design
- Limited amount of self-disclosure to demonstrate relatability
What are the steps of planning stage?
Setting goals - don’t set lofty goals
Generating and discussing alternatives
Formulating a plan
Evaluating the exercise program
There are process and product goals. What are process goals?
Something the client does, e.g. Completing a certain number of workouts a week
What is motivational interviewing and what is the goal?
Motivational interviewing is designed to show support for the other party while challenging his/her current behaviours. The goal is to create awareness in clients that a sedentary lifestyle will likely cause health problems.
What is motor learning?
The process of acquiring and improving motor skills. “Tell, Show, Do.”
What are the three stages of motor learning?
- Cognitive: When new motor skills are first being learned. Movements are often uncoordinated and jerky. Use “tell, show, do” in this stage.
- Associative: Basics mastered, ready for more specific feedback that will help to refine the motor skill.
- Autonomous: Motor skills performed effectively and naturally, trainer is monitoring rather than teaching.
What does the health theory model predict?
The health theory model predicts that people will engage in a health behavior based on the perceived threat they feel regarding a health problem and the pros and cons of adopting the behavior.
