C25 - Nomenclature and optical isomerism Flashcards
1
Q
What is optical isomerism?
A
When a molecule exists as two isomers that are non-superimposable, mirror images of each other, just like a left hand and right hand. Optically active compounds exist as two isomers, known as enantiomers
2
Q
What does a compound need to be optically active?
A
It must contain a called a chiral carbon
3
Q
What is a chiral carbon?
A
A carbon atom to which four different groups are attached. And is denoted by *
4
Q
How can you distinguish between 2 enantiomers?
A
To distinguish between 2 enantiomers use polarised light as the enantiomers wouldrotatelight in opposite directions
5
Q
What is the name given to a mixture that contains equal amounts of enantiomers?
A
A racemic mixture (racemate)
