C2.5 Flashcards
What is an example of an exothermic reactions?
Methane+oxygen=carbon dioxide+water
What is an endothermic reactions?
A reaction that takes in heat from its surroundings
What is the rate of a chemical reaction?
The speed at which it takes place
What does rising the temperature of two reactants do the reaction?
It speeds the reaction up
What is the concentration of a solution?
The concentration of a solution is how strong it is
What does raising the concentration of a solution do to a reaction?
It increases the rate If the reaction
What can you do to a solid to make it react with a solution faster?
Break it up into smaller pieces
What does breaking up a solid do?
Gives it a larger surface area so the reaction occurs faster
What needs to occur in a substance for a reaction to occur?
The particles must collide together
Why does increasing the concentration of a solution decrease the reaction time?
There are more particles in a citation area to collide with each other
Why does increasing the temperature of a solution decrease the reaction time?
The particles will move faster in the solution which will cause more reactions
Why does increasing the surface area of a substance decrease the reaction time?
There is more surface area for the reaction to happen so more reactions are happening at the same time which causes the reaction to speed up
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up itself
Give an example of where a catalyst is used?
Iron - making ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen
What is a benefit of catalysts?
The reactions can be done at a lower temperatures and pressures than normal which saves energy and money
