C2.1 Flashcards
What is the centre of a particle called?
A neucleus
Name the three subatomic particles and how they are charged:
Protons-positively charged
Neutrons-neutrally charged
Electrons-negatively charged
How can you tell how many protons are in an atoms?
By the number of electrons-they are the same
How can you tell the atomic number of an atom?
The number of protons is the atomic number
How can you tell the mass number of an atom?
Protons in nucleus + neutrons in nucleus
Why us relative atomic mass used as a measurement?
The mass of atoms is too small so relative atomic mass is used instead
How is the modern periodic table arranged?
In order of increasing atomic number
How was Mendeleev’s table arranged?
In order of increasing atomic mass
What are the horizontal rows called in the periodic table?
Periods
What are the vertical columns called in the periodic table?
Groups
What is an isotope?
Different atoms of an element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
What does the presents of isotopes cause?
The atomic number of an atom to not be hole eg. 35.5
How are electrons arranged?
In shells around the nucleus of an atom
What is the name of the way electrons are arranged in it shells?
It’s electron configuration
What is Mendeleev’s table mor comely known as?
The periodic table
