C2.4 Flashcards
What are atoms of elements in a compound held together with?
Chemical bonds
How are ionic bonds formed?
Metal atoms lose one or more electrons to form positive ions - non metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions
How is a simple molecular covalent bond formed?
Atoms share electrons to get a full outer shell - covalent bonds hold atoms together in molecules
How do giant molecular covalent bonds form?
Atoms share electrons to get a full outer shell - covalent bonds hold billions of atoms together in giant structures
When are ionic bonds formed?
When a metal reacts with a non metal
When does a covalent bond form?
Between two atoms of non metal elements
What does malleable mean?
Can be hammered
What are atoms in metals held together by?
Metallic bonds
Describe the configuration of atoms in a solid metal
They are close together and the outer shell electrons overlap. The outer shell electrons are free to move around the see of electrons
What is a delocalised electron ?
An electron that is not located in a specific atom
Where are transition metals located in the periodic table?
In the central block
List two qualities that transition metals have
- high melting points
- form coloured compounds
What are the two difference between alkali metals and other metals?
They are softer and have a lower melting point
What happens to the reactivity of alkali metals as you go down the group?
It increases
Why does reactivity of alkali metals increase as you go down the group?
The elements at the bottom of the group have more electrons and more electron shells. The reactions happen by losing outer electrons. There are more in the atoms of the elements at the bottoms of the groups so they are more reactive
