C2 Periodic Table Flashcards
How are the elements ordered in the periodic table (periods and groups)
(Periods) In order of increasing atomic number (number of protons in the nucleus)
(Groups) the number of electrons on the outer shell
Are nobel gasses reactive or unreactive
Unreactive
What are the first three elements in the periodic table
Lithium
Sodium
Potassium
What group of elements are most reactive and why
Alkali metals are most reactive because all of the elements have 1 electron on the outer shell meaning it is easier for the element to lose that electron and gain a full outer shell
Give 3 characteristics of group 1 metals
Soft
Reactive
Low melting point
What happens when group 1 metals react with water
They form positive ions with a +1 charge by losing their single outer electron
Why are nobel gasses unreactive
Nobel gasses already have a full outer shell of electrons so they dont need to lose or gain an electron to have a succesful full outer shell
What are the first 3 elements in group 7
fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br)
What are the main properties of halogens
Low melting and boiling points
Very reactive
Non-metals
What is the trend in reactivity in group 1
Elements become more reactive the further you go down the group because the outer electron gets further away from the nucleus
What is the trend in reactivity in group 7
The halogens become less reactive the lower you go down the group because the atomic mass of the halogens increases
Why do elements in group 7 react similarly
Because they all have 7 electrons on their outer shell
