C2 Exam Review Theory Flashcards
What is command?
The authority vested in an individual of the armed forces for the direction, coordination, and control of military forces
What is control?
The authority exercised by commanders over part of the activities of subordinate organizations or other organizations not normally under their command, which encompasses the responsibility for implementing orders or directives. Control provides a means of exercising effective command.
Describe the steps in the OODA loop
Observe - Commander gathers as much information as possible to inform a decision. Increasing the amount of valuable information increases the number of factors that can be considered in the decision-making process, which allows for better decisions. Reduce uncertainty as much as possible.
Orient - Commander forms an understanding of the gathered information by forming estimations, judgments, and conclusions from the provided data. This shapes the Commander’s perception of reality. Goal is to understand the battle space as accurately as possible.
Decide - Commander formulates and disseminates COA. Intent must be communicated at all levels so execution is as intended.
Act - Actions that are carried out by the subordinates. Observations gathered during this to inform the next decision.
What are the methods of control
Detailed control & mission control.
Explain detailed control
Centralized command and control
Orders and plans are explicit
Use when time is not a constraint
Vertical flow of information
Does not function well under rapidly changing circumstances or when lines of communication have been disrupted
Explain mission control
Decentralized and flexible command and control
Orders and plans convey intent from higher up
Horizontal flow of information
Unity of effort through cooperation rather than conformity
What are the levels of warfare and describe them
Strategic, operational and tactical
Tactical - Describes management of individual engagements or battles
Operational - Management of a campaign or major operation consisting of the coordination and planning of a series of engagements
Strategic - Management of a theatre of operations or the national level defense policy and foreign policy strategies
What are the types of data and describe them
Inorganic - Data shared from another platform
Organic - Data gathered directly by sensor systems on our platform
Intelligence - Informs us on what is going to happen rather than what is currently happening
What are the desired characteristics of the C2 system
Reliability - Standardizing equipment
Security - Use crypto
Timeliness - Fast OODA, real-time processing
Flexibility - Respond to changing external environment, be able to rapidly reconfigure
Interoperability - Process external inputs, and exchange among commanders
Survivability - Design, protection (dust proof and shock mounted MCEs)
What is data correlation
The measure of association between two variables
Determine if two radars are tracking the same target
What is data fusion
The process of combining sensor inputs to create an output with less uncertainty than any individual source (Kalman filter)
Potential future on Naval C&C systems
