C2 Chemistry - collision theory and factors affect rate of reactions Flashcards
what does the collision theory suggest?
the rate of reaction depends on how often and how hard the reacting particles collide with each other
what 3 things affect the rate of collisions
higher temperature
higher concentration
larger surface area
how does temperature affect the collisions
temp is increased - particles move quicker
they collide more often
how does the concentration affect collisions
in a solution
more concentrated - there are more particles of reactant knocking between water molecules
collisions between important particles more likely
how does the surface area affect collisions
the particles in the solution will have more area to move therefore colliding frequently
what has to happen in order for chemical reactions to happen
the reactant particles must collide
how does temperature affect the rate of a reaction?
3
the reactant particles move quickly
more energy
particles collide more often
how does concentration affect the rate of reaction?
2
particles become crowded
collide more often
how does the surface area affect the rate of reaction?
3
surface area increases
more particles exposed to other reactants
more collisions
