B2 Biology - Cells, organs and tissues Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
Contains genetic material, controls activities of cell
what is cytoplasm?
where most chemical reactions occur, contains enzymes
what is mitochondria?
where reactions for respiration happen
cell membrane?
holds cell together
controls what goes in and out of cell
Ribosomes?
proteins made in cell
Chloroplasts?
where photosynthesis happens
contains chlorophyll
what is yeast?
microorganism
which cell has no nucleus ?
bacterial cells
what is diffusion (scientific explanation)
the spreading out of particles from a high concentrated area to a low concentrated area
Diffusion:
the bigger the difference in concentration…
the faster the rate of diffusion
what substances can pass through cell membrane?
amino acids
glucose
oxygen
why do red blood cells have a concaved shape?
bigger surface area to absorb oxygen
what happens to the egg membrane when fused with sperm?
structure changes to stop more sperm coming in
what is differentiation?
process by which cells become specialised for particular job
what is tissue?
group of similar cells that work to do particular function
muscular tissue?
contracts to move whatever is attached to it
Glandular tissue?
makes and secretes chemicals like enzymes and hormones
Epithelial tissue?
covers parts of body eg. inside of the gut
muscular tissue within stomach?
moves stomach wall to churn up food
glandular tissue within organs?
makes digestive juices to digest food
Epithelial tissue within stomach?
covers outside and inside of stomach
what do glands do?
produce digestive juices
what does the stomach do?
digest food
what does the liver do?
produces bile
small intestine?
absorbs soluble food molecules
large intestine?
absorbs water from indigestive foods, leaving faeces
