C16 Using Resources Flashcards
What is potable water?
Water that is safe for domestic use
What are the 2 steps in treating freshwater?
Filtration and sanitisation
What is sustainable development?
Meeting the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of those in the future
List 3 methods of disinfecting water:
-UV light
-Ozone
-Chlorine
What are the 2 methods of desalination?
Reverse osmosis and distillation
List 4 things that we use the Earth’s resources for:
-Warmth
-Food
-Transport
-Shelter
List 3 sources of waste water:
-Agriculture
-Urban usage
-Industry
Why must we treat wastewater?
Can damage ecosystems and pose a health risk to humans
Name 2 contaminants in agricultural wastewater:
Fertilisers and pesticides
Describe the process of sedimentation:
Water is left in a sediment tank, and suspended solids sink to the bottom
What are the 2 products of sedimentation?
Sludge and effluent
Describe the process of aerobic digestion in treating wastewater:
Air is pumped through the water, encouraging aerobic bacteria to break down organic matter and microbes
How can copper be produced from copper sulfide?
It can be heated in a furnace with oxygen, producing copper and sulfur dioxideL
List 2 disadvantages of using smelting to extract copper from copper sulfide:
-Produces sulfur dioxide
-Copper produced is impure
Describe how copper is purified after extraction:
An impure copper anode is connected to a pure copper cathode at either end of a terminal. The electrodes are submerged in a solution of copper sulphate. Copper is ionised at the anode, flows through the solution to the cathode and is reduced.
How can scrap iron be used to extract copper?
It can be reacted with copper sulphate solution, producing pure copper in a displacement reaction.
What is the advantage of using scrap iron to extract copper?
Means less scrap iron goes to landfill
What is fresh water?
Naturally occurring water containing low levels of solutes
What is the pH of pure water?
7
How is reverse osmosis carried out?
By forcing salt water through a membrane at high pressures
What is the name of a substance formed via distillation?
Distillate
What is an organic compound?
Certain types of carbon-containing compound
