C11 Reversible Reactions Flashcards
What is meant by the term equilibrium?
The concentration of products and reactants reaches a balance and stops changing.
Why do reversible reactions reach equilibrium?
The forward and backward reactions are occuring at the same rate.
If the equilibrium position lies to the right, there is a greater concentration of ………
Products
T or F- If a reversible reaction is exothermic in one direction, it will also be exothermic in the other.
False- it would be endothermic
[also if that was true if might violate energy conservation i think maybe]
Summarise Le Chatelier’s principle:
If the conditions of a reversible reaction are altered, the system will attempt to counteract the change.
What happens to a reversible reaction if the temperature is increased?
The yield of the endothermic reaction will increase.
What happens when the pressure is increased?
The yield of the reaction which produces fewer gas molecules increases.
What happens if you decrease the product concentration?
The reactant concentration will decrease
