C13 Hydrocarbons Flashcards
Saturated
A molecule in which all the atoms are linked together by single (sigma) bonds only
Hydrocarbon
A compound that contains hydrogen and carbon only
Aliphatic
Carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains, branched chains or non-aromatic rings
Radical
A particle that has at least one unpaired electron
Substitution
A reaction in which an atom (or group) is replaced by another atom (or group)
Homolysis / homolytic fission
occurs when a covalent bond is broken so that the atoms joined by the covalent bond each take one of the shared electrons
Unsaturated
Molecules contain one or more double (or triple) bonds
Stereoisomers
Have the same molecular and structural formulae but a different 3D spatial arrangement
Addition
A ructions in which two molecules combine together to form a single product
Electrophile
An electron-pair acceptor that forms a covalent bond
Markownikoff’s rule
Stated that the advent other than hydrogen goes to the least hydrogenated carbon atom
