[C10] Metals Flashcards
What are the general physical properties of metal?
- high melting and boiling point.
- Malleable
- Ductile
- Good conductor of heat and electricity
What is an alloy
Mixtures of a metal with other elements
Why are alloys used instead of pure metals
Other elements in the structure can change the properties of the alloy and make the alloy stronger than the parent metal.
What is a metallic bonding
Lattice of positive ions in a ‘sea of electrons.’
Place in order the reactivity series
Potassium
Sodium
Calcium
Magnesium
Aluminium
(Carbon)
Zinc
Iron
(Hydrogen)
Copper
Use of aluminium
-In aircraft parts because of it strengths and low density
-In food containers because of its resistance
General equation of reactivity of metal with water
Metal + water —> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
General equation of reactivity of metal with acid
Metal + acid —> salt + hydrogen
(Unreactive metal e.g. gold, copper do not react)
General equation of reactivity of metal with oxygen
Metal + oxygen —> metal oxide
Name three different types of steel and what they are alloyed with
- Stainless steel (20% Chromium and 10% Nickel)
- Tungsten steel (5% tungsten)
- Manganese steel (13% Manganese)
