C10 Flashcards
combustion of the alkenes
Complete combustion of an alkene forms carbon dioxide and water.
Reaction with hydrogen
The alkenes are unsaturated compounds, their molecules do not contain the maximum number of hydrogen atoms possible in a hydrocarbon molecule, but the addition of a hydrogen molecule across the double bond will form a saturated hydrocarbon.
Alcohol uses
They are used as solvents and fuels, and ethanol is the main alcohol in alcoholic drinks.
Combustion with alcohol
Alcohols burn in air, forming carbon dioxide and water.
Alcohol with sodium
Alcohol reacts with sodium metal to form a solution of sodium alkoxide and hydrogen gas is given off.
Oxidation of alcohol
Ethanol can be oxidised to ethanoic acid, by chemical oxidising agents or microbes in the air. Ethanoic acid is the main acid in vinegar.
