C.1 Simple harmonic motion SL Flashcards
Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM)
Oscillations around an equilibrium position where acceleration is directly proportional to displacement but in the opposite direction
Equation for acceleration in SHM
Total energy in SHM
Sum of the kinetic and potential energy at any point in the motion. It remains constant, periodically transferring between kinetic and potential energy.
Time period (T)
The time taken for one complete cycle of oscillation. Relates to frequency as T= 1/f
Angular frequency (ω)
Relates to frequency and time period as ω=2πf=
2π/f
Simple pendulum time period
Mass-spring system time period
Equilibrium position
The position where the oscillating system would rest if all motion ceased.
Amplitude
Maximum displacement from the equilibrium position
Frequency in pendulum and mass-spring systems
Number of oscillations per unit time, inversely related to the time period
