C1 Aerodrome Control Flashcards
What is the ADC task divided between?
Air Control (AIR)
Ground Movement Control (GMC)
Ground Movement Planner (GMP)
What is logged on the APC Daily Report Form?
NPR deviations
Preferential runway operations
Go arounds
Taxiway T - out of hours operations
What are the responsibilities of GMP?
What are the hours of operation?
What is the frequency?
Passing initial airways clearances to departing aircraft
Passing CTOT restrictions on regulated departures
Assisting GMC with planning the push and start sequence to accommodate restrictions
Coordinate all emergency action with GMC
Hours of operation are flexible and applied by WM on a tactical basis (H24 in AIP?)
Frequency 121.930
What are the responsibilities of GMC?
What is the frequency?
What are the hours of operation?
Control of all aircraft on the apron and manoeuvring area excluding runways
Control of all vehicles and persons on the manoeuvring area excluding runways
Passing airways clearances to departing aircraft
Frequency 121.805
Hours of operation as when Operationally Required (AIP)
Before bandboxing what should controllers consider?
Pending traffic
Airfield restrictions
Present and forecast weather conditions
Equipment unserviceabilities
When is runway 33 to be selected as the preferential runway?
Surface wind is 5 knots or less and
Runway surface is dry
No safety significant tailwind components at higher levels on approach
In the event FOD is reported what should the AIR controller do?
In Daylight:
Carry out visual scan of runway surface
If the nature and position of FOD can be observed and is considered not to impair safety:
Aircraft within 4NM given details
Landing clearance may be issued
Crew may elect to go around
Departing aircraft given details of FOD and intentions requested
If any doubt exists about the nature and position of FOD:
Aircraft instructed to go around or hold and advised reason
Request a SRIP
Suspend arrivals and departures until SRIP completed and ASU are satisfied runway is clear of FOD
In hours of darkness/LVPs etc:
Aircraft on approach issued missed approach
No aircraft permitted to land or depart until SRIP has been completed and ASU satisfied that runway is clear of FOD
What primary uses may the ATM be used for?
- Determine the landing order, spacing and distance from touchdown of arriving aircraft
- Assist in applying longitudinal separation for departing aircraft
- Confirm initial track of departing aircraft conforms with clearance
- Provide information to aircraft on position of other aircraft in circuit of on instrument approach
What are the additional uses of the ATM?
• Following identification, validate SSR codes of departing aircraft and verify associated Mode C readouts
• Monitor the progress of overflying aircraft identified by approach radar control
• Establish separation between departing aircraft
• Pass traffic information
• Establish separation in the event of a missed approach
• Assist in taking corrective action when separation between arriving aircraft becomes less than the prescribed minima
• Monitor wake turbulence separation
Who is responsible for the identification and validation of Mode A task of Birmingham departures and under what circumstances?
The Air controller is responsible provided that both PSR and SSR are serviceable
Who is responsible for the verification of Mode C and transfer task of Birmingham departures and under what circumstances?
Approach radar is responsible, but may delegate this task to the Air controller (check + chuck) subject to tower workload, separation against TC/PC traffic, weather etc.
Both PSR and SSR must also be serviceable
What are the controller actions following report of a birdstrike?
Irrespective of visibility:
- Inbound aircraft within 4nm from touchdown advised and intentions requested, landing clearance can be granted
- Inbound aircraft outside of 4NM from touchdown advised to continue approach subject to SRIP, otherwise instructed to go around
- Departures suspended until SRIP has been completed
What does AFDAS stand for?
Approach Funnel Deviation Alert System
When preferential conditions apply a supplementary message should be appended to the routine ATIS message, stating:
“The preferential use of runway 33 is in operation. Pilots requiring to land on runway 15 must advise ATC and state that it is for operational reasons”
Following the report of a bird strike what should the Air controller do?
Advise subsequent inbounds. Aircraft within 4NM from touchdown asked if they wish to continue and can be cleared to land
“Previous departure reported suspected birdstrike at (location), do you wish to continue?”
Aircraft on approach outside 4NM from touchdown instructed to continue or missed approach until SRIP has been completed
Suspend departures until SRIP has been completed
