C1 Flashcards
What is an element?
In an element, all of the atoms are the same.
What is a compound?
Contain two or more different elements combined in fixed proportions.
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances in any proportion.
What is filtration used for?
Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
What is crystallisation used for?
Crystallisation is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid
What does simple distillation do?
Separates solid and liquid in an aqueous whilst keeping the liquid and the solid
What is fractional distillation used for?
It is used to separate a mixture of different liquid with different boiling points.
What is filtration used for?
Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid that is suspended in a liquid
What is chromatography used for?
Chromatography is used to separate a mixture of substances dissolved in a solvent
What is the name for elements in group 7?
Halogens
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element(same proton number) that have a different number of neutrons
What is formed when a metal reacts with a nonmetal?
An ionic compound
What are elements in group 0, more commonly known as?
The noble gases
What are the properties of group one metals?
- Soft
- one electron in outer shell
- react rapidly with oxygen
What are characteristics of the halogens?
-Seven electrons in outer shell
-coloured vapours,
-diatomic molecules
-form ionic salt with metals
-form molecular compounds with nonmetals
-get less reactive as go up table
