C08 - Aircraft Axes and Aircraft Wing Flashcards
Name the three Aircraft Axis which rotate around the Centre of Pressure and their purpose?
- Longitudinal Axis = Roll.
- Lateral Axis = Pitch.
- Normal Axis = Yaw.
Define Wing Tip?
End of the Wing furthest from the Fuselage.
Define Wing Root?
Where the Wing joins the Fuselage.
Define Wingspan?
Distance between each Wing Tips.
Define Wing Area?
The gross area of the Wing, including the Fuselage between the Wing Roots.
Define Wing Taper?
The wing whose Chord at the Wing Tip is shorter than the Chord of the Wing Root.
Define Taper Ratio?
The Ratio of the Wing Tip Chord and Wing Root Chord.
Define Aspect Ratio?
The Ratio of the Wingspan and Average Wing Chord.
Define Sweep Angle?
Angle at which is inclined to the Lateral Axis.
Define Mean Aerodynamic Chord?
The Chord of an imaginary rectangular wing which has similar Longitudinal Stability properties to the actual wing,
Define Angle of Incidence?
The angle between the Chord Line of the Wing and it’s the Aircraft’s Longitudinal Axis.
Define Washout?
Reduces the Angle of Incidence from Wing Root to Wing Tip.
What are the two terms used to describe the way in which Wings are set at an angle relative to the Aircraft’s Lateral Axis?
- Dihedral.
- Anhedral.
The Wings tips which are designed to be lower than the Wing Roots is known to be what?
Anhedral.
The Wings tips which are designed to be higher than the Wing Roots is known to be what?
Dihedral.
