C02, P01 - V - Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Contains only nerves and connects the CNS to rest of the body.
Three primary functions of nervous system
Sensory, integrative, motor.
Sensory Function
Ability to sense changes in external and internal environments.
Integrative Function
Ability to analyze and interpret sensory information to produce a proper response.
Motor Function
Neuromuscular response to sensory information.
Proprioception
The cumulative sensory input to the CNS from all mechanoreceptors that sense body position and limb movement.
Sensory Neuron
(Afferent) Transmits nerve impulses from effector sites to the brain and spinal cord.
Interneuron
Transmits nerve impulses from one nerve to another.
Motor Neuron
(Efferent) Transmits nerve impulses from the brain and spinal cord to effector sites.
Mechanoreceptors
Sensory receptors responsible for sensing distortion in body tissues.
Muscle Spindles
Receptors sensitive to change in length of the muscle and the rate of that change.
Golgi Tendon Organs
Receptors sensitive to change in tension of the muscle and the rate of that change.
Joint Receptors
Receptors surrounding a joint that respond to pressure, acceleration, and deceleration of the joint.
