C - Properties of metals Flashcards
1
Q
What part of the periodic table contains non-metals?
A
Far right
2
Q
List the 3 basic properties of metals:
A
- Strong (but can be bent or hammered into different shapes)
- Great at conducting heat
- Great at conducting electricity
3
Q
Copper is good because… (3)
A
- good electricity conductor (electrical wires)
- strong but can be bent
- doesn’t react with water
4
Q
Aluminium is good because… (3)
A
- corrosion-resistant
- Light
- Forms strong alloys
5
Q
What metal is best for plumbing? Why?
A
Copper - doesn’t react with water, can be bent
6
Q
What metal is best for an aeroplane? Why?
A
Aluminium - strong, can be bent, light
7
Q
What is best for a replacement hip? Why?
A
Titanium - doesn’t corrode, light
8
Q
Titanium is good because… (3)
A
- It’s light
- Very strong
- Corrosion resistant
9
Q
What does malleable mean?
A
Can be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking
10
Q
What does ductile mean?
A
Can be drawn out into thin wire
11
Q
What are the two main disadvantages of metals?
A
- They can corrode when exposed to air and water (oxidation - rust)
- They can get tired when stresses and strains are repeatedly put on them over time (metal fatigue) which can lead to them breaking which is dangerous e.g. Planes
