C. Design Principles Flashcards
What is primary market research?
Collects research data first hand for a specific purpose. It is created by those needing the data
What is secondary market research?
Research information created by others. Vast amounts readily available to access
What are some examples of primary data sources?
Interviews
Questionnaires
Surveys
Focus Groups
What are some examples of secondary data sources?
Government data
Company reports
Exemplar work from others
Articles
What are the advantages of primary data sources?
Data is up to date and relevant
Questions and surveys can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the designer
What are the advantages of secondary data sources?
Data is already collated and available
Data may be free/low cost
Huge amount of research is available and accessible
What are the disadvantages of primary data sources?
A large number of people needed to make the data relevant and accurate
It’s time consuming to collect the data
What are the disadvantages of secondary data sources?
Data might not be up to date
Data may not be specific to company needs
What is the acronym used to critically analyse a product? What does each letter mean?
ACCESS FM
Aesthetics
Cost
Customer
Environment/Ergonomics
Safety
Size
Function
Material
What is ergonomics?
The process of designing products and workplaces to fit the people who use them
Why is ergonomics important for a designer to consider?
It improves the human interaction with a product, environment or workspace and minimises the risk of injury.
What is anthropometric data?
The study of the human body, its measurements and proportions
Explain one way in which ergonomics can aid carrying a product.
The design of ergonomic handles will make carrying a product more comfortable; a form-fitting design will evenly distribute the load through the fingers
What will a design brief usually contain inside it?
The product and its purpose
The target market and who will use it
Budget and timescale
Where it would be sold
How and where it would be used
What is a manufacturing specification?
A document containing all the information needed to make a product. It will include technical drawings/CAD diagrams as well as timing plans
Write a design brief for this toolbox
To provide a lockable box for tools storage
Requires a secure carry handle designed to be comfortable to hold and take the weight of the contents
A finish that protects it from rust and knocks
Long enough to hold a large hammer
Wide enough to hold several tools
What does UCD stand for?
User Centred Design
What is UCD?
Involves the user through a series of research and investigative steps to make a usable product
What is iterative design?
The continual cycle of prototyping, testing, gathering feedback and making improvements until a final product is ready for release
What are some advantages of iterative design?
Ensures a product is fit for purpose
Meets functionality requirements
Is reliable and usable
Cost saving process prevents manufacturing with errors
What is destructive testing?
Testing a product to its extreme
Why is destructive testing useful for the designer?
Helps guide them on the appropriate choice of materials and construction method
What is non-destructive testing?
Tests the function and usability without destroying the prototype or end product
Why is non-destructive testing useful for the designer?
Identifies areas of a products weakness
What is a one-point perspective drawing?
A method of drawing that shows the view becoming smaller as it gets further away and converges at a single vanishing point
What are the characteristics of an isometric drawing?
All vertical lines stay vertical
Horizontal lines are drawn at 30 to the horizontal plane
Can measurements be taken from isometric drawings?
Yes
