C&D - Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development (AO3 NOT DONE) Flashcards
Vygotsky’s Theory of Cognitive Development - Zone of Proximal Development
The gap between what a child can currently do and what they can do with the assistance of a MKO.
Vygotsky’s Theory of Cognitive Development - Scaffolding
Any kind of help which MKO’s provide to a child to assist them crossing the zone of proximal development.
Scaffolding is usually assisting them but then slowly taking that help away when they become independent.
5 stages
(Aspects of Scaffolding) - Recruitment
Scaffolding which engages the child’s interest in the task.
(Aspects of Scaffolding) - Reduction of degrees of freedom
Scaffolding which focusses the child on the task and where to start with solving it.
(Aspects of Scaffolding) - Direction maintenance
Scaffolding which encourages the child in order to help them to stay motivated and continue trying to complete the task.
(Aspects of Scaffolding) - Marking critical features
Scaffolding which shows the child how to do aspects of the task.
(Aspects of Scaffolding) - Marking critical features
Scaffolding which highlights the most important parts of the task.
Vygotsky’s Theory of Cognitive Development - Cultural differences in cognitive abilities
Children will acquire the reasoning abilities of the people they interact with.
