Q

Piaget’s stages of intellectual development - Sensorimotor stage (0-2 years approx.)

A

The baby’s focus is on physical sensations and basic coordination between what they see and their body movement.

The ability of object permanence is developed during this stage at the age of eight months.

Q

Piaget’s stages of intellectual development - method of testing egocentrism

A

Tested using the ‘three-mountains task’.

3 doll is placed at various locations around three mountains, and children must indicate w photos which perspective is which.

Q

Piaget’s stages of intellectual development - class inclusion

A

Class inclusion refers to the ability to classify objects into two or more categories simultaneously. For example, the ability to recognise that large categories such as ‘cars’ includes smaller sub-categories such as ‘blue cars’ or ‘red cars’ or different manufacturers.

Piaget’s stages of intellectual development (Evaluation - Limitation#1)

A LIMITATION IS THAT THERE IS ISSUES WITH PIAGET’S METHODOLOGY REGARDING CONSERVATION.

A

A LIMITATION IS THAT THERE IS ISSUES WITH PIAGET’S METHODOLOGY REGARDING CONSERVATION.

The child may have thought that they were meant to think there was a change in the amount liquids as there would be no reason for them to ask if there was a different amount of liquid if they did the change right in front of them.

McGarrigle and Donaldson set up an experiment where a ‘naughty teddy’ accidentally moved the number of counters on the desk and compared it against a control which used the same research method Piaget used.

72% of the experimental group correctly said that there was the same number of counters as before, showing that children aged 4-6 can correctly conserve as long as they were not put off in the way they were questioned.

This research evidence suggests that Piaget’s theory lacks reliability and external validity as a result.

A STRENGTH IS THAT THERE IS RESEARCH EVIDENCE SUPPORTING THE EXISTENCE OF A SEQUENTIAL SET OF STAGES.

Piaget conducted cross cultural studies from different cultures, such as USA, Britain, Africa, and China
found that children there developed at similar rates. This supports Piaget’s ideas about universality.

A

LIMITATION HE WAS WRONG ABOUT CLASS INCLUSION
Piaget said pre-op kids physically incapable of understanding class inclusion no matter what
Siegler and Svetina tested 100 five year olds make them do test then explain to them what class inclusion is
their scores increeased
suggesting they can understand class inclusion, piaget validity decrease.
