A

Canter and Heritage (1990) conducted a content analysis of 66 sexual assault cases.
A computer program was used to identify correlations across patterns of behaviour.
Several common characteristics were identified
This supports usefulness of Investigative psychology as statistical techniques can be applied.
This can lead to an understanding of how an offender’s behaviour can change or whether they committed 2 or more offences.

Evidence to support Geographic profiling

the location of each…
This supports Canters claim that

A

Lundrigan and Canter (2001) collected info from 120 murder cases of Serial Killers in US
location of each body disposal site was different direction creating a ‘centre of gravity’
This supports canter’s claim that SPATIAL info is key factor in finding base of offender.
This is because the offenders base was found in the COG meaning offenders can be tracked due to geographic profiling.

Q

Bottom up approach more scientific than top down

A

Bottom up approach is more objective and scientific than top down approach.
it uses statistical techniques and geographical data and Its less driven by speculation than top down.
These methods are more reliable than top down, as its objective and unbiased.
This also means it can be used in court cuz its objective evidence.

Q

bottom up has had failures

A

Bottom up has had some failures
Copson surveyed 48 police forces and found that advice provided by the profiler was useful in 83% of cases
this shows that although it can be effective sometimes it can cause police to incorrectly identify offenders
This reduce utility of BOttom up approach
impact is some people may never be put to justice an dinnocen tpeopl can be arrested instead. cuz they look similar./
