BVM Tips Flashcards

1
Q

Squeezing the bag: volume

A

Too much volume could lead to barotrauma, hyperinflation of the lungs, increased intrathoracic pressure, decreased venous blood return to the heart
* most sick people rely on adequate pre load, killing it with the bvm could hurt patient
Barotrauma: injury caused by a change in air pressure.
Atelectasis: Alveolar collapse

Q

Squeezing the bag: pressure/speed

A

Air goes into trachea and esophagus.
Air into stomach Results in gastric distention.
Gastric distention :
1. Patients vomit when stomach is filled with air
2.filling stomach with air causes it to compress the diaphragm and inhibit lung expansion

Q

Squeezing the bag: rate

A

Maintain an appropriate rate by monitoring ETC02
ETC02 rage 35-45 mmHg
If you are going to fast the ETC02 will decrease
If you are going to slow the ETC02 will increase

Q

PEEP (positive end expiratory pressure)

A

Amount of pressure maintained in the lungs and airways at the end of exhalation

  • pressure maintained by the glottis and upper airway structures
  • pressure allows the alveoli to remain inflated and not collapse during exhalation
