6-29-17 Homework Flashcards
What is Boyle’s Law?
Pressure is inversely proportional to volume.
As volume increases, pressure decreases.
As volume decreases, pressure increases.
Inhalation creates what type of pressure, and what does the diaphragm do?
Negative pressure, contracts
When forcing air in with a BVM, what type of pressure does it create?
Positive pressure
What is a pneumothorax?
Collapse lung
What is a tension pneumothorax?
Air enters pleural space lining the lungs, creates shift of mediastinum.
Increases intrathoracic pressure, and decreases venous return to the heart,
What is Henry’s Law?
At higher pressure, our body will absorb more gasses
Gases are more soluble under pressure
As pressure decreases, gases ablility to dissolve decrease
As pressure increases, gases ability to dissolve increase
What is tidal volume?
The amount of air moved with each breath
Average adult and infant tidal volume
Adults 5-7mL/kg
Infants 6-8 mL/kg
What is residual volume?
Air left in the lungs to keep them open
Ventilation is regulated by what
PH of cerebral spinal fluid
What does the medulla control
Rate, depth, and rhythm of breathing
What do chemoreceptors do?
Monitor chemical composition of body fluids
Medulla dorsal:
Ventral:
Dorsal: initiates inspiration
Ventral: motor control of depth, rate
What is Oxygen dissociation curve?
Things that shift curve to the right: Decrease Po2 Increase blood PCo2 Increase hydrogen concentration Increase blood temp
What is oxygenation?
Oxygen molecules loaded onto hemoglobin molecules
