What is the employment law?
A law protecting the rights of employees which must be obeyed by the employers
What is the equality act 2010?
The Equality act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society.
It also says that employees who do equal work or work of equal value must receive the same pay as workers of the other sex .
How many hours does the Uk Law state you should not work more than?
- However some people choose to “opt out” to work more.
How many days holiday are full- time employees entitled too per year?
28 days paid holiday per year.

What is training?
The action of teaching an employee a skill
What are the 3 methods of training employees ?
- Induction- When an employee starts working for a new business- what’s involved varies
- On-the-job - Assistance and advice provided by more experienced to less experienced employees. May include work shadowing or learning to use specific machines.
- Off-the-job - Learn new skills away from the workplace, may take place on courses, taught new skills through demos, talks and lectures
Advantages and disadvantages of on-the-job training
Advantages:
- Specific training needed for the job
- Trainees can see relevance to job more clearly when skills are taught in the workplace
Disadvantages:
- Taking time away from teaching employees’ jobs
- Some workers have bad habits they could pass on
Advantages and disadvantages of off-the-job training
Advantages:
- More focused with less distractions
- Less stressful compared to with on-the-job (don’t have to learn skills + do tasks as going along)
Disadvantages:
- More expensive than on-the-job meaning cost of business will increase
- Employees may fail to see links between training and workplace
What is recruitment?
The process of finding and hiring the best quality candidate for a job vacancy
What does the recruitment process include?
- Analysing the requirements of a job
- Attract employees to that job
- Screening + selecting applicants
- Hiring + inducting the new employee to the business
Why does a business recruit?
- Business growth
- To close skill gaps
- To replace employees who leave the business
