Bulpitt: Reasons For Non-adherence Flashcards
Method?
Review article of research identifying problems with taking medication with serious side effects for hypertension.
Qualitative.
Procedure?
Statistical analysis of physical+psy effects of medial adherence for hypertension (work, well being, hobbies, personal life, etc.)
Results?
Anti-hypertension medication= sleepiness, dizziness, lack of sexual functioning in men, cognitive functioning
Curb et al: 8% dropped out due to sexual problems
Medical research council: 15% dropped out due to side effects
Conclusions?
When costs, such as side effects, outweigh the benefits of treating an asymptomatic problem (like hypertension) there is a less likely chance of adherence.
Pros?
- concurrent validity= variety of reviews
- qualitative= more detail about reasons behind behaviour
- holistic= takes into account psychological+physiological
Cons?
- researcher bias as interpretation of review articles
- temporal validity= due to social/cultural change results may less valid
- social desirability when discussing sexual problems
Aim?
To review research on adherence in hypertensive patients.
Background?
- 1 in 2 patients don’t adhere
* reasons= side effects, forgetfulness, not understanding, cost of drugs etc.
