Bandura/ Self-Efficacy Flashcards
Method?
Quasi experiment
PPs?
10 (9 females, 1 males) snake phobic patients who replied to an advertisement, aged 19-57
Procedure?
- Fear+perception of how well they could cope measured
- Given relaxation exercises
- Desensitisation: photos, same room, handling
- Coping perception measured
Results?
- second fear scores significantly lower+coping perception higher
- desensitisation works
- self-efficacy both cognitive and behavioural as learned+associating snakes with no harm
What is self-efficacy?
Concept that says we work harder if we think we can succeed and working harder means we are more likely to succeed.
What are the 4 influences on self-eff?
- vicarious= comparing with another
- enactive= past experiences of success or failure
- emotive= anxiety vs confidence
- persuasory= positive feedback
Pros and cons of Bandura?
PROS:
•lab= cause+effect, extraneous v
CONS:
•low pop v+reliability as small sample
•gynocentric
•only 1 fear tested
Pros and cons of self-efficacy?
PROS:
•shows motivations+perceptions= can build upon it
•generalisable to people+behaviours
CONS:
•fluid concept= can change back
•reductionist= excludes other possible factors
•self report= social desirability
Aim?
To assess the self-efficacy of patients engaging in systematic desensitisation for snake phobias.
What was the background?
- developed by Bandura in 1986 from concept of Internal LOC
* determines thought process before healthy living + outcome
