large localised bullae
Who is affected by bullous pemphigoid?
> 60 yrs old
What is the pathology of bullus pemphigoid?
IgG autoantibodies formed against basement membrane
How is bullous pemphigoid treated?
if localised high potency topical steroids
if generalised prednisolone 40-80mg/day for 2 weeks
What is the prognosis of bullous pemphigoid?
benign, self-limiting with no relapse
most remission 3-6 months
How does pemphigus present?
flaccid erosions on skin and mucosal membranes esp mouth
What is Nikolsky sign?
rubbing sideways on skin will induce a blister in pemphigus
What is seen on histology of pemphigus?
intra-epidermal split
What is the pathology of pemphigus?
IgG autoantibodies against desmosomes
How is pemphigus treated?
high dose intermediate cyclophosphamide + high dose steroids (dexamethasone)
What is the prognosis for pemphigus?
10-20% mortality
