With reference to the Ship/Shore safety checklist for the loading and unloading of dry bulk carriers, list items that must be checked prior to commencing cargo operations.

- Is the depth of water on the berth adequate for cargo operations?
- Are mooring arrangements adequate?
- In an emergency is the ship able to leave the berth at any time?
- Is there safe access between the ship and shore.
- Is there agreed communication between ship and shore?
- Is the shore contact person identified.
- Are adequate crew on board to deal with operations?
- Are there adequate personnel available at the terminal?
- Have any bunkering operations been agreed?
- Have any intended repairs to either the ship or terminal been advised?
- Has a procedure for reporting damage been agreed?
- Is the atmosphere in the cargo holds safe?
- Has the ship been supplied with information regarding the loading rate?
- Are the cargo holds easily identifiable?
- Have the trimming requirements been agreed?

List the duties of the Officer of the Watch during the loading of the ship.
A
During the cargo operations the Officers are responsible for ensuring that the following are continuously monitored;
- The agreed loading or unloading sequence s being followed by the terminal.
- Any damage to the ship is reported.
- The cargo is loaded symmetrically into each hold.
- The cargo is trimmed correctly.
- Effective communication must be maintained with the terminal.
- The loading rate does not exceed that agreed between ship and terminal.
- Any changes to the loading or discharging sequence required by the terminal or the ship for operational reasons are followed.
- The cargo and ballast operations are synchronised.
- Ballast tanks are sounded to ensure that the ballasting or de-ballasting operation is proceeding according to plan.
- Draught surveys are conducted as required by the loading or discharging plan.
- The SWSF & SWBM are maintained within acceptable limits.
