Buffer Solutions Flashcards
Define a buffer solution
A buffer solution is a water solvent-based solution which consists of a mixture containing a weak acid or a weak base and the conjugate acid of the weak base
How do buffers maintain pH?
It is able to neutralize small amounts of added acid or base, thus maintaining the pH of the solution relatively stable.
Give an example of an acidic buffer solution
CH3COOH + CH3COONa and C6H3COOH + C6H5COONa
Describe the composition of a basic buffer solution
A basic buffer solution has a basic pH and is prepared by mixing a weak base and its salt with strong acid
Explain the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation in the context of buffer solutions
pH= pKa + log ([A-] / [HA]) and [A] refer to the equilibrium concentrations of the conjugate acid-base pair used to create buffer solution.
