Pumpkin pairing
Harvested from three parcels amounting to 1 hectare, planted between 1920 and 1940 on calcareous clay with southern exposure. There are even some bush vines here. Harvested at very low yields of 3,000kg/ha (about 21 hl/ha). The grapes are destemmed and are fermented in concrete tanks. Maceration for the 2013 vintage lasted a full two months. The wine was aged for 18 months in used barriques of 225 and 300L. 2500 bottles produced

Q

Viñedos Gabián, Xanledo, Ribeiro, Galicia, Spain 2015

A

Xanledo is a blend of Brancellao and Caiño Longo, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts and 100% whole clusters in open-top used French oak and steel vats without temperature control, and 40 days skin maceration. The wine is raised for 10 months in various sized used French oak (225, 300, 600 & 700L), and is bottled with only a very light filtration.

Viñedos de Gabián is a new, small project from Raul Perez’s long-time assistant winemaker – José “Pepiño” López-Quecuty Pereiro. Pepiño works a single 3-hectare terraced, amphitheater-style vineyard named “Gabian” that he planted in 2011 by himself. He also purchases fruit from local growers that make up a substantial part of the cuvee while his vines reach maturity. The soil is granite sand, the farming is organic without certification, and the winemaking is traditional.

von Hövel, Scharzhofberg, Auslese, Saar, Germany 2010

A

The 21-hectare von Hövel estate operates out of a manor house that was completed in the 12th century, where it initially served as an abbey retreat. Located in Konz-Oberemmel in a side valley of the Saar, which is known as Konzer Tälchen (“little valley” of Konz), the old cellar is today as it was over 800 years ago.

Vintage report 5/5
Rain in August swelled the grapes but also encouraged some botrytis to set in. September was mixed, with some cold weather and rain towards the end of the month. There was grey rot, and affected bunches had to be removed. Botrytis was widespread by early October, sugar levels were high, and the harvest was in full swing. The best wines were rich and concentrated. Very high quality.

46
Q

Dagueneau et Pautrat, Les Jardins de Babylone,

Jurançon, France 2011 60

A

Dagueneau was discouraged by the region’s lack of appellation status for such wines and launched a search outside the Loire to pursue a unique, worldclass
dessert wine. Seeking to stake his claim in an under-realized vinicultural region, the winemaker ended up at the foot of the Pyrenees just south of Pau in Southwest
France where his new estate’s spectacular ampitheatre of terraced vineyards prompted Dagueneau to adopt the name Babylone.
Dagueneau quickly adapted to the Petit Manseng vines
