Bronchitis Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the Epidemiology of bronchitis
A
More common in Men
2
Q
What causes acute and chronic bronchitis?
A
Acute:
• Viral and bacterial infections e.g. influenza
• Exposure to irritants e.g. pollution, chemicals
Chronic
• Smoking
3
Q
Describe the pathogenesis of acute bronchitis
A
- Cells of the bronchial-lining tissue are irritated
- Mucous membrane becomes hyperaemic and oedematous
- Bronchial mucociliary function diminishes
- Air passages become clogged by debris and irritation increases.
- In response, excessive secretion of mucus develops
- Which causes the characteristic cough of bronchitis.
4
Q
Describe the pathogenesis of chronic bronchitis
A
- Smoke impairs ciliary movement,
- Function of alveolar macrophages inhibited
- Leads to hypertrophy and hyperplasia of mucus-secreting glands.
5
Q
What are some symptoms of Bronchitis?
A
- Cough
- Sputum
- Fever
- Nausea
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- General malaise and chest pain (in severe cases)
6
Q
Diffuse diminution of air intake or inspiratory stridor are indicative of…..
A
Bronchial or tracheal obstruction
7
Q
How can chronic bronchitis affect the heart?
A
Can cause right ventricular hypertrophy therefore leading to a sustained heave along the left sternal border
8
Q
What are some complications of Bronchitis?
A
- Cor pulmonale
- Pneumothorax
- Haemoptysis
