What is bronchiolits?
First episode of wheezing in association with a viral infection. Asthma has not been diagnosis
What age group do you see bronchiolitis and what time of year?
Generally before the age of 2. Dec-March
Early signs of bronchiolitis?
Rhinorrhea, stuffy nose, cough, low grade fever, irritability. Cough may worsen around day 3 (wheeze and raspy sounding cough)
Later signs of bronchiolitis?
intercostal retractions, suprasternal retractions, hyper expanded lungs, wheezes, crackles, grunts, cyanosis
Treatment for bronchiolitis?
Fever control (tylenol), nasal clearance, O2 if needed, NO albuterol aerosols, NO hypertonic saline aerosols, NO racemic epinephrine aerosols
When should an infant receive a influenza vaccine?
After the age of 6 months
Who is hospitalized?
under 6 months old, premature babies, resp. distress,
What prevention is used for bronchiolitis?
Synagis- palivizumab (monoclonal antibody against RSV)
