Brody Flashcards
assumptions
1) Fetuses are innocent human beings
2) Intentional killing is wrong”
general thesis/argument
1) It is absolutely impermissible and ought to be illegal ever intentionally to kill an innocent human being
2) All fetuses are innocent human beings
3) Abortion is the intentional killing of fetuses
4) Abortion is absolutely impermissible and ought to be illegal
relevant examples
Lifeboat (A is sick and is going to kill B, If B doesn’t kill A then A will recover, but kill B in the process, should B be allowed to kill A?
Medicine (C owns medicine that A needs to live, and will give it to A only if A kills B)
Doctorine of double effect, Tried to define the difference between accidental and intentional killing (DDE kinda backfired on him)
major objections
HIT and MERCY cases argue that either the DDE is wrong, or that the intentionality (whether it was intentional or not) of killing does not determine whether it is wrong
anything else
Brody focuses on killing vs letting die - he says letting die is not intentional killing, so it’s not morally wrong
