Britain methods of P Flashcards
What was one of the methods that involved women?
targeting women with a great deal of moral pressure and obligation to send men to fight, as in such posters as ‘To the Women of Britain. Won’t You Help and Send a Man to Join the Army To-day? (Source 2), or attempted to shame them with a poster saying “Will you go - or must I?”.
Give one evidence of the role of women as recruiting agents:
Baroness Orczy, a novelist who formed the Women of England’s Active Service League, shows the role women played in the recruitment of men. Her manifesto reads, “Your hour has come! … We shall form outselves into an Active Service League whose sole object will be that of influencing our men to offer themselves as once to the nearest recruiting officer”.
What was another method after women (hint: children)?
the emotional blackmail of using children to shame their elders into war was also employed as a way to recruit.
3rd method ( anti-Germany)?
the demonization of the enemy, Germany, also used as a plea to enlist.
What was the first task of P?
to “mobilize the animosity of the community against the enemy” as by H.D. Lasswell, and create atrocity stories of Germany as seen in the poster ‘Men of Britain! Will You Stand This?’ (Source 1).
What did the anti germany P create for Britain?
It created the ideal image of Germany being the aggressor, Britain the crusader for the rights of small nations, and for democracy and freedom.
One evidence of atrocity stories by Britain:
The War illustrated, described how German soldiers murdered babies and hung children over a fire in Belgium, under the headline, ‘Horrible Stories of German Fiendishness’.
Why was anti german P used?
used to justify war and Britain’s part in it; it became the drive for recruitment.
