Moving to suburbs
Improvements- houses had more space, clean water healthier conditions
Drawbacks- only rich people could afford the suburbs
Link to improved health- reduction in tb, less crowded
Nuisance removal act
Year- 1855
Improvements- gave police power to close properties that were a threat to public health
Drawbacks- not providing new houses, increased housing shortages so people had to move in together more
Link to improved health- increased in tb, typhus because of increased overcrowding. Decreased cholera and typhoid because there were cleaner properties where the water might not be contaminated
Artisans and labourers dwelling act
Year- 1875
Improvements-Gave councils the power to demolish slum housing
Drawbacks- It didn’t make new houses so this law actually contributed to the housing shortage and many families had to move in with other families for shelter. Also expensive.
Link to improved health- Gets rid off the bad houses in the first place so there might be better water supply, so decrease in cholera. Increase in tb in the long run because there would be more overcrowding
Public health act
Year- 1875
Improvements- Gave councils the right to dig up streets and provide water supplies and sewers in return for higher council taxes
Drawbacks- This was an expensive enterprise which the public had to pay for.
Link to improved health p- Decrease in cholera, typhus and typhoid because of the clean water because of good sewers.
Council houses built
Year - 1900
Improvements- councils bought land, built houses and charged fair rent to tenants
Drawbacks- The local councils never built enough council houses for the demand so some people continued to live in poor conditions
Link to improved health - Decrease in tb, Scarlett fever because of improved ventilation.
Glasgow Corporation Water Works Act
Year -1855
Improvements- Linked Loch Katrine reservoir to provide Glasgow with clean, fresh water
Drawbacks- cost a lot of money, only done by local council not across the country
Link to improved health- Reduction in risk of cholera, typhus and typhoid as a result of a clean, fresh water supply. Glasgow was one of the first cities to do this.
Edward Jenner
Discovery - first ever vaccine, it was for small pox.
Impact on public health - Reduced amount of smallpox, saved many lives. Saved the lives of children.
Joseph lister
Discovery- antiseptics, cleaning surgical instruments and cleans wounds
Impact on public health- made surgeries safe becuase of antiseptics, so people didn’t get infected wounds.
Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch
Discovery- Louis Pasteur discovered the existence of bacteria which caused germs.
Koch took this even further and identified the germs that caused TB and cholera.
Impact on public health - developing vaccines against different diseases
Florence Nightingale
Discovery- she made hospitals cleaner by introducing sanitation making them safer.
Impact on public health- reduced the amount of infected wounds people got at hospitals
