entrepreneurs sought to profit from the huge demand for housing leading to
Poor quality houses being built as fast as they could
others subdivided existing buildings into single-roomed homes to house entire families leading to
Overcrowding
houses had no indoor toilets so
people were disposing human waste in the streets
underground sewers did not exist for another 100 years so there
there were open sewers running through the streets attracting vermin
clean water was not provided into homes meaning
they couldn’t wash their hands regularly
walls were thinly insulated and few rooms had windows which lead to
a build up of damp leading to lung conditions
Cholera
Caused by contaminated water
Had symptoms of fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and sickness

Scarlet fever
Causes - overcrowded/ badly ventilated conditions spread through air
Symptoms - strawberry tongue, rash, fever

Typhus
Cause- being close to someone with body lice in overcrowded places
Symptoms- body lice lay eggs which cause rashes and high fevers
Link to housing conditions- unclean clothing, no ability to keep clothes clean,
Typhoid
Cause- drinking contaminated water
Symptoms - fever, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, sickness
Link to housing conditions- people didn’t have toilets so there is cross contamination in the water supply
Tuberculosis
Cause - spread through spitting or drops of saliva/mucus from coughing
Symptoms- coughing up blood
